Why the reference year matters
“Latest available” does not always mean the same calendar year everywhere. Statistical releases arrive on different schedules, and some territories do not report every indicator. EqualAtlas therefore stores the year beside the value instead of presenting a mixed-year ranking as a perfectly synchronized snapshot.
Maps are arguments, too
The default Equal Earth projection preserves relative area, making thematic patterns less visually biased by latitude than they would be on a Mercator map. A projection still cannot preserve every spatial property, so the methodology explains what each view keeps and distorts.
Use the source, not only the ranking
Rankings are starting points for questions, not universal measures of success. GDP does not measure equality, density does not show settlement patterns inside a country, and national life expectancy can hide large differences between groups. Consult the source register, follow the primary indicator links and download the data when you need a reproducible analysis.
Continue with the guides to the largest countries by mapped area, largest populations, responsible GDP-map reading and life-expectancy rankings.
