The current leaders in this dataset
The five largest latest available population values in the current EqualAtlas import are India, China, United States, Indonesia, Pakistan. India ranks first with about 1.5B people in its 2025 observation, ahead of China.
Latest available is not one universal date
International datasets combine national statistical systems whose censuses, estimates and revisions are released on different schedules. A responsible ranking therefore keeps a reference year beside every value.
EqualAtlas selects the latest imported non-null observation for each profile. It does not replace an unavailable value with zero and does not hide the fact that two rows may refer to different years.
Population is not population density
India's mapped density is about 463.9 people per km², but a country's total population and its average density answer different questions. A very large country can hold many people while remaining less dense than a small urban territory.
What the national total hides
Country totals do not show age structure, migration, urban concentration or differences between regions. They are best used as a first global comparison, followed by more specific demographic sources and local context.
