Natural Earth
Country boundaries and coastlines come from Natural Earth through the world-atlas TopoJSON package. Natural Earth releases its raster and vector map data into the public domain and permits modification and commercial use.
The directory contains 238 ISO-coded places with individual Natural Earth geometry. Most use the 1:50m file; Gibraltar, Tuvalu and the United States Minor Outlying Islands use a 1:10m fallback. Dependencies merged into a parent-country geometry are not given a false independent area.
The mapped Africa comparison unites the complete geometries of the 54 UN member states in Africa plus Western Sahara. This reproducible definition includes whole transcontinental-state geometries rather than claiming a survey-grade physical-continent boundary.
World Bank Open Data
Population, GDP, life expectancy, capital and regional metadata are imported from World Bank APIs. EqualAtlas displays the reference year with the value and does not call the API during visitor page views. World Bank open datasets are generally available under CC BY 4.0 unless a dataset is labelled otherwise; downstream users must preserve attribution and check the applicable dataset metadata.

D3 geography
D3 supplies the Equal Earth and Mercator projection implementations and spherical geographic calculations. D3 is distributed under the ISC licence.

ISO country codes
The MIT-licensed i18n-iso-countries package connects ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 identifiers with Natural Earth numeric geometry IDs. EqualAtlas keeps common English display names and stable URL slugs where an official long name would be less useful.
Country flags
Flag artwork is served locally from the MIT-licensed Flag Icons project. Flags identify country and territory profiles; they do not change EqualAtlas's neutral boundary and sovereignty disclaimer.
Downloads and update policy
Data imports are versioned and validated before release. The public CSV and JSON exports are generated from the same source file as the live country pages so they cannot silently drift apart. New datasets are reviewed individually; a publisher's general open-data statement is not treated as permission for every file it hosts.
