Teach the map—and its choices.

A suggested 35-minute lesson

Begin by asking students whether Greenland or Africa looks larger on a familiar wall map. Record predictions before opening the equal-area overlay. Then switch the interactive map between Equal Earth and Mercator and ask which visual properties change.

Use one country profile to discuss the difference between area, population and population density. End by having students name the projection, source and reference year they would cite in a written conclusion.

Suitable classroom uses

The activity is designed for secondary geography, social studies, data literacy and introductory cartography. Teachers should adapt language and assessment depth to their curriculum and students. EqualAtlas is an explanatory resource, not an official boundary authority.
