Learning objectives

Before the lesson

  1. Print or share the student worksheet.

  3. Open the Greenland–Africa comparison in a second tab.
  4. Decide whether students will work from printed maps, projected screens or their own devices.

Lesson sequence

0–5 min · Predict

Show a familiar Mercator world map. Ask whether Greenland or Africa appears larger and collect reasons without correcting the class.

5–12 min · Test

Reveal the equal-area overlay. Africa is almost fourteen times Greenland's mapped area in this stated dataset definition.

12–20 min · Switch

Toggle Equal Earth and Mercator on the full-screen map. Ask what changes near the poles, what remains useful and why neither projection can preserve everything.

20–29 min · Compare evidence

Pairs choose two profiles and record area, population, density, reference years and sources.

29–35 min · Conclude

Students write a three-sentence evidence-based conclusion. Invite one pair to name a limitation that could change interpretation.

Teacher answer key

Expected ideas, not fixed wording

1. Prediction

Students may say Greenland looks comparable to Africa on a Mercator map. A strong answer notes that visual area on a projected map is not automatically a measurement.

2. Test

The EqualAtlas comparison shows that Africa's stated mapped footprint is almost fourteen times Greenland's. Small differences from other published totals can arise from coastline detail and territorial definitions.

3. Projection

Equal Earth preserves relative area, so equally sized parts of Earth occupy equal map areas. Mercator preserves local angles and is useful for conformal direction, but its scale grows strongly toward the poles.

4. People and space

Population density is population divided by the mapped area. Good responses retain each population reference year and avoid describing a national average as if people were evenly distributed.

5. Evidence

A complete conclusion names the projection, includes a numerical comparison and identifies a limitation such as data year, boundary definition, coastline resolution or the distinction between land area and mapped footprint.
