Four profiles in four different positions

The examples are teaching anchors, not labels for every country in their quadrant.

Area comes from displayed Natural Earth geometry; population is the latest imported World Bank value. Because reference years can differ, use the fixed-year change dataset for trend analysis.

The short answer

A large country can have a large or small population, and a small country can also have a large or small population. Land area and population are separate variables; population density is the ratio produced when one is divided by the other.

The scatter plot places every profile with population data on logarithmic axes. That scale keeps microstates and continent-sized countries visible in one chart without pretending that equal pixel distances represent equal absolute differences.

Larger area, higher population: India

India combines a mapped footprint of about 3,155,814 km² with a population above 1.5B in the latest import. It shows that a country can be geographically large and still have a high national density.

Larger area, lower population: Australia

Australia occupies a continent-scale footprint but has far fewer residents than India. National density is low, yet that average does not describe how strongly the population is concentrated in coastal metropolitan areas.

Smaller area, higher population: Bangladesh

Bangladesh shows the opposite combination: a much smaller mapped footprint with a very large population. The result is a high national density, but settlement, floodplains, cities and rural land still create important variation inside the boundary.

Smaller area, lower population: Iceland

Iceland anchors the lower-population side while remaining large enough to see clearly on a world map. Its northern latitude also makes it a useful reminder that Mercator can visually enlarge geography independently of the population data.

Why the axes are logarithmic

Country areas and populations span several orders of magnitude. On linear axes, most profiles would collapse into a corner while the largest values dominated the canvas.

A logarithmic axis makes proportional differences visible. The chart labels that transformation because reading it as a linear scale would exaggerate small numerical gaps.

Density is useful but incomplete

Dividing population by mapped area creates a reproducible national average. It does not show habitable land, urban concentration, infrastructure capacity or how people experience crowding.

Use the quadrant to choose meaningful comparisons, then consult profiles, density data and subnational sources before explaining human settlement.
