Population size alone does not determine data quality. Registration completeness, estimation methods, age structure and revisions also matter, so rank differences should be interpreted with source metadata.
The short answer
Life expectancy is calculated from mortality rates across age groups. In a small population, a relatively small number of deaths—or changes in which ages they occur—can have more influence on annual observed rates than the same count would in a very large population.
Published international series may also combine observed registration data, interpolation and modeled estimates. A smooth decimal value is therefore not proof that every difference between adjacent ranks is precisely observed.
Life expectancy is a period measure
Life expectancy at birth asks how long a hypothetical newborn would live if the mortality rates observed for each age continued throughout life. It is not the average age of death in the current population and not a personal forecast.
The measure depends on an entire life table, not only infant mortality or the deaths recorded in one age group. Changes in age-specific mortality can move the final estimate in different ways.
Why small populations can be more variable
Rates use events in the numerator and population exposure in the denominator. With fewer people and events, random year-to-year variation can represent a larger share of the calculated rate.
Statistical agencies may reduce noise by pooling years, smoothing rates or using model life tables. Those choices improve interpretability but mean the published series is not always a direct count translated mechanically into one number.
Why revisions are normal
International datasets draw on civil registration, censuses, surveys and demographic models. New population estimates, late registrations or revised methods can change earlier values as well as the newest observation.

How to compare responsibly
Treat small differences as approximate unless the source provides uncertainty intervals and comparable methods. Check whether profiles are sovereign states or territories, whether the years match and whether the source describes interpolation or modeling.
Use the ranking to discover patterns, then follow the primary statistical source before explaining causes or declaring one health system superior to another.
