Reference-parallel Mercator scale
The spherical Mercator formula provides a transparent local-scale demonstration. Linear scale is approximately sec(latitude); local area scale is approximately sec²(latitude).

These are local scale factors at idealized parallels. A country covers a range of latitudes, and ellipsoidal implementations differ slightly from the spherical teaching model.
The short answer
Northern Europe lies much farther from the equator than most of Africa, South Asia or northern South America. On a Mercator world map, scale grows with latitude, so northern European land receives more visual area than equal-sized land closer to the equator.
The effect applies to every region at the same latitude; it is not a special adjustment for Europe. Europe becomes a useful example because familiar wall maps often combine high northern latitude with a rectangular Mercator frame.
Why the table uses reference parallels
There is no single Mercator enlargement factor for northern Europe. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and their neighbours extend across different latitude ranges, and the scale changes continuously from south to north.
Reference parallels expose the mathematical pattern without pretending that a whole country sits at one coordinate. By 60° north, a small surface patch occupies about four times the map area it would receive at true scale in the spherical model.
Europe's definition is a separate question
Projection distortion and regional membership should not be mixed. EqualAtlas's Europe object follows the UN M49 Europe group and includes each member's complete Natural Earth geometry, including Russia's complete geometry.
A physical-continent definition that clips Russia at a Europe–Asia boundary can produce another legitimate total. The projection determines how area is drawn; the membership rule determines which area is counted.
Why Equal Earth is clearer for thematic maps
Equal Earth preserves relative area, so a square kilometre does not gain visual weight merely because it lies farther north. This matters when colour represents population, GDP, emissions or another indicator and readers mentally combine colour with footprint.
An equal-area map still distorts shapes and angles. Its advantage here is specific: comparisons of geographic share and choropleth footprint are not pre-weighted by latitude.
