Density combines people and space

Population density divides a population count by an area. A density map then asks readers to interpret both colour and geographic footprint. If the projection enlarges some footprints purely because of latitude, those regions receive extra visual emphasis unrelated to the statistic.

The Mercator weighting problem

On a Mercator thematic map, sparsely populated northern land can occupy a large share of the screen, while densely populated equatorial regions receive less visual space than their true area warrants. The colour values may be numerically correct while the overall visual balance remains misleading.

What equal area fixes

An equal-area projection ensures that equal patches of Earth's surface occupy equal patches of the map. It does not fix uncertain census counts, boundary definitions or the variation hidden inside national averages, but it removes projection-driven area inflation from the picture.

National averages need context

Country-level density can hide cities, deserts, forests and uninhabited interior regions. EqualAtlas labels density as a calculation from its displayed population and mapped area rather than presenting it as a complete description of settlement.

Read the year and denominator

Check the population reference year and whether the denominator is land area, total area or mapped geometry. Comparisons are strongest when every country uses the same rule and each source year remains visible.
