EqualAtlas divides each profile's latest imported World Bank population by its displayed Natural Earth mapped area. Every row retains the population reference year.

This is a country-or-territory average, not a measurement of urban crowding. Small territories and generalized coastlines can be especially sensitive to the chosen area denominator.

The short answer

The highest calculated densities in the current EqualAtlas import begin with Macao, Singapore, Gibraltar, Maldives, Hong Kong. Macao is approximately 29,821.7 people per km² using its 2025 population observation and EqualAtlas mapped area.

How the density is calculated

Population density is population divided by area. EqualAtlas uses the latest imported non-null World Bank population value and the spherical area of its displayed Natural Earth geometry. That makes every row reproducible from the downloadable dataset.

The method deliberately keeps the population year visible. Latest available values can refer to different years because statistical systems publish and revise observations on different schedules.

Why territories dominate the top

Several leading profiles are compact urban territories. A small denominator can produce a very high average even when the absolute population is far below that of a large country.

This collection includes ISO-coded territories as well as sovereign states. A ranking limited to independent states would therefore have a different order, and any comparison should name which population it includes.

Density is not the same as crowding

A national or territorial average does not show the lived density of a particular neighbourhood. It combines dense cities, infrastructure, parks, water and less populated land into one denominator.

Conversely, a large country can have a low average while containing extremely dense metropolitan regions. Use subnational or gridded population data when the question is where people actually live inside a boundary.

Why equal-area geography matters

The numeric density remains the same regardless of projection, but the map's visual weighting does not. Equal Earth prevents high-latitude land from receiving extra screen area purely because of latitude, allowing colour and proportional geography to work together more honestly.
