Population observations can be revised. Density is a national average based on EqualAtlas mapped geometry, not a measure of how crowded every part of either country feels.
The short answer
China's mapped footprint is about 2.97 times India's, but India's 2025 population observation is about 1.04 times China's. The combination makes India's calculated average density roughly 3.1 times higher.
Area: China occupies the larger footprint
EqualAtlas measures China at approximately 9,371,247 km² and India at 3,155,814 km² from the same Natural Earth 1:50m dataset. Using one geometry source avoids comparing an official land-area figure for one country with a total-area figure for the other.
These are visualization-derived mapped areas. Coastline resolution, inland water and disputed-boundary choices can make official statistics differ, so the values are best used for consistent atlas comparison rather than legal measurement.
Population: read the year beside the number
The current import gives India 1,463,865,525 people and China 1,406,585,000 people, both with a 2025 reference year. Keeping the year visible matters because international population estimates are revised and a future refresh can change both values and their ratio.
Density combines two different measurements
Dividing the displayed population by mapped area gives approximately 463.9 people per km² for India and 150.1 for China. This explains why similar population totals can produce very different national averages when geographic footprints differ so strongly.
Neither average describes settlement inside the boundary. Deserts, mountains, farmland and intensely populated metropolitan areas are compressed into one number; gridded or subnational data is needed to study where people actually live.
Why an equal-area overlay helps
A map projection does not change either country's underlying area, but it changes the amount of screen space the outline receives. The Equal Earth overlay lets the larger Chinese footprint and smaller Indian footprint appear in the same proportional area system.
