Mercator prioritizes local angles
Mercator was created for navigation. A straight line can represent a constant compass bearing, but scale grows rapidly toward the poles. That is why Greenland, northern Canada and Russia appear much larger relative to equatorial regions.
Equal Earth prioritizes relative area
Equal Earth keeps the area relationship between regions correct. It is better suited to questions such as “which country is larger?” or thematic maps where the visual footprint should not be distorted before data is added.
Neither map is the globe
A flat projection is a tool with a purpose, not a perfect model of Earth. For distance, route or local navigation questions, use a projection designed for that task. For the comparisons on EqualAtlas, equal area is the relevant choice.
