Canada really is large—but Mercator enlarges it further
Canada is one of the world's largest countries by geographic area. Yet the outline most people remember from a Mercator world map gives it even more visual weight because much of the country lies at high northern latitudes.
Mercator's scale grows with distance from the equator. Northern Canada is therefore drawn at a much larger scale than land near the equator, even though both appear in the same rectangular map frame.
Why the northern islands dominate
The Canadian Arctic Archipelago reaches toward the pole, where Mercator stretching becomes especially strong. Wide-looking channels and islands make the northern half of the country feel comparable with entire continents. On an equal-area projection, those features keep their geographic importance without receiving extra area from the projection.
A better way to compare Canada
Compare calculated area values derived from one consistent boundary dataset, then inspect both places on an equal-area map. EqualAtlas uses Natural Earth geometry for the visible outline and the spherical area calculation, so the number and the shape describe the same mapped object.
Shape still changes on Equal Earth
Equal Earth preserves relative area, not every angle or distance. Canada's outline may look less familiar because readers have learned its Mercator silhouette. That unfamiliarity is evidence of a different cartographic trade-off, not a claim that one flat map can preserve everything.
