Area depends on a boundary
A country area figure begins with a chosen boundary representation. Coastline resolution, inland water, overseas territories and disputed regions can all change the result. Two reputable sources can therefore publish slightly different totals.
One geometry for map and measurement
EqualAtlas uses Natural Earth geometry and calculates its spherical area with D3. This provides internal consistency: the outline used for a comparison is the outline being measured.
Why values are rounded
The map geometry is generalized for global display. Reporting false precision would suggest a legal or surveying accuracy the dataset does not claim. EqualAtlas rounds mapped areas and labels them as estimates derived from the displayed geometry.
Territorial neutrality
Displaying a boundary is unavoidable in a country atlas, but it should not silently imply a legal judgment. EqualAtlas documents the source dataset and treats disputed-boundary choices as visualization metadata, not political conclusions.
